Dyed mulch is the single biggest curb-appeal upgrade for the money in most Atlanta landscapes. It is recycled or reclaimed hardwood, shredded fine and coated with a colorant, which gives beds a deep, uniform look that natural bark and hardwood simply cannot match straight out of the pile. How mulch dye actually works
Commercial mulch dye is one of two things: an iron-oxide based colorant (the same family of pigment used in red brick and rust-colored concrete stains) for reds and browns, or a carbon-based colorant for true black. Both are applied to the wood chips in a controlled mixing process before delivery, not sprayed on loosely, which is why a properly dyed load colors evenly all the way through rather than just on the surface. This is unrelated to, and much safer than, the old chromated-copper-arsenate (CCA) pallet-wood mulch concerns from decades ago — that practice has been discontinued industry-wide for years, and none of our mulch uses it.
Because the color goes through the chip, dyed mulch does not rub off on hands, pets, or patio furniture once it has had a day to dry after installation. It is safe around children, dogs and cats, and it does not harm plants or alter soil pH the way people sometimes assume — the dye is cosmetic, not chemical treatment of the wood itself.
Black, brown or red — which to choose
Black gives the highest contrast against green turf and evergreen foundation plantings, and it holds its color the longest of the three because darker pigments show fade less visibly than lighter ones. It reads modern and is the most requested color for newer construction and updated landscapes.
Brown uses the same base colorant technology tuned to a warmer, more natural tone. It blends into brick exteriors and traditional architecture — common across older intown Atlanta neighborhoods — without looking as deliberately "landscaped" as black.
Red is the boldest option and shows the most visible fade over a season since red pigments are more sensitive to UV exposure than black or brown. It pairs well with brick homes that already carry a warm palette, but expect to refresh it slightly sooner if you want the color to stay vivid.

How long dyed color actually lasts
Black holds strong color for 12 to 14 months in most Atlanta sun exposure. Brown runs close behind at 11 to 13 months. Red fades the fastest, typically needing a refresh at 8 to 10 months to stay looking vivid, though it still functions as weed suppression and moisture retention well past that point — the fade is cosmetic, not functional.
